Upper Egypt, the Said, is the cultivated valley of the Nile, which extends from south of Cairo to the Sudanese border. This might be contrary to what you think if you go by the name, but it actually comes from 'upstream', so up the river Nile.
This fertile land is never more than 20 kilometres wide on either side of the river. Nearly one-third of Egypt's population is living in this valley.
Upper Egypt is famous for its tombs and temples from ancient Pharaonic times. Especially the country around ancient Thebes, modern day Luxor, is well worth a visit.
Upper Egypt is also the historic centre of Egypt's Christian population; currently at least half of Egyptian Christians are living there, mostly in Asyut, Minya and Sohag. You can find a lot of the places visited by the Holy Family along the Nile
